Drug discovery and development continues to be a challenge in pain management, with hopes of finding an effective, safe, tolerable and non-addictive analgesic. This updated talk will review some of the mechanisms and modalities of analgesics that have recently come to market or those in clinical development. Hopefully, with our advances in the understanding of nociceptive pathophysiology, we can bring the promise of new therapeutics that have the potential to provide improved pain relief for those many patients whose needs remain poorly met.
Learning Objectives:
Explore shortcomings of current analgesics
Define nociceptive pathways and potential analgesic targets
Categorize analgesics in development by mechanism of action
Evaluate analgesics in early and late stage development
(If time allows) Discuss challenges with analgesic clinical trials
