The Gauss (G) or miliTesla (mT) units measure noninvasive electromagnetic field (EMF) simulation in neuromodulation. The Tarlov scale is an accurate tool for assessing motor impairment.
Purpose/Objectives:
Demonstrate motor amelioration using the Tarlov scale after EMF therapy in a Sciatic Nerve Constriction (SNC) model.
Methods:
SNC was done to cause paresis in the right hind limb to observe motor changes in male Sprague-Dawley rats (380g-520g). Four groups were divided, with five rats in each, having a Control Group (CG) that was just injured. In the experimental groups, rats were treated for two hours a day for four weeks with EMFs, applying different Gauss intensities to each group: LIMF 60 (6 mT), MIMF 100 (10 mT), and HIMF 140 (14 mT). The mobility was measured each week using the Tarlov scale. We used the Bonferroni post hoc test and repeated measures ANOVA with two tails, with a significance level between 0.05 and 20% power.
Results:
EMFs are effective in an SNC model in rats, improving the mobility of the right hind limb in all experimental groups. In the last phase of this model (4 weeks), the CG scored 2.4 (± 0.89) p=0.003, LIMF achieved 4 (± 0) p=0.001, MIMF obtained 4 (± 0) p=0.001, and HIMF 3.6 (± 0.54) p=0.001.
Conclusions/Implications for future research and/or clinical care: Mobility of the right hind limb improved in all experimental groups using EMFs in SNC with a Tarlov scale evaluation.
