Interventional Pain Medicine physician The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Background: Platelet rich plasma holds great promise to help in the repair of musculoskeletal damage in the properly selected patient population. For example, platelet-rich plasma hold promise in the healing of tendinopathies associated with use of biphosphonates.
Purpose/Objectives: The primary goal is to demonstrate the healing benefits of platelet-rich plasma when prepared using a double-spin technique using the EmCyte Supraphysiologic system and ultrasound guidance.
Methods: Case report.
Results: Excellent outcome --patient reported "90-95%" pain relief and improvement in functional status and overall quality of life. Patient was seen and evaluated by several other physicians and no successful treatment was performed until two series of platelet-rich plasma injections under ultrasound were performed. Patient did extremely well!
Conclusions/Implications for future research and/or clinical care: Further research on the use of platelet-rich plasma in the repair of musculoskeletal injections of joints, tendons and ligament is necessary for patient pain relief and functional restorative. This is much hope for the future use of this therapy.
