Tonya Edwards is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Palliative Care, Rehabilitation, and Integrative Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She has been employed with MD Anderson for 18 years. She has been a nurse over 25 plus years. She was the recipient of the prestigious Brown Foundation award for excellence in nursing at MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2016. Her research interest focuses on pain management and risk management strategies to address aberrant opioid use and promote safe opioid prescribing practices. Ms. Edwards has been invited to present at several national and international conferences. She created the Compassionate High Alert Team (CHAT), a specialized treatment program to prevent opioid misuse amongst cancer patients. She started the Opioid Crisis Seminar Conference at MD Anderson seven years ago. She has authored two chapters and authored and coauthored numerous articles.
